Jean was born on a farm on Exmoor, and educated in a boarding school in Taunton. She did her General Nursing followed by Midwifery Training in Bristol Hospitals in the early 1950s. After that she spent seven years in the Kenya Colonial Nursing Service just at the end of the Mau Mau uprising.
On returning to the UK, Jean went to Southampton University to train as a Health Visitor, subsequently working in the Southbourne area of Bournemouth for twenty three years. During this time her husband was Mayor of Bournemouth, and she very much enjoyed her hectic year as Mayoress. Jean also sat as a Magistrate on the Bournemouth Bench for eighteen years.
Since retiring Jean has been Chairman of a local Housing Association, and the Retired Nurses National Home. She is currently a member of their Board of Trustees.
Jean has been a Trustee of Macmillan Caring Locally for many years, and is proud of her involvement with such a worthwhile Charity.
