The Changing Times We Live In

So…. Did you indulge in a little cake to celebrate 46 years of the Mac Unit? And how did you fair in the 70s quiz night?

If you joined us last month for any of our virtual birthday celebrations, thank you and we hope your enjoyed yourselves. Thanks also for all your wonderful birthday fundraisers and donations, including the ones made during the quiz (the extra donations to get Barry to face-plant the bowl of mashed potato were very much appreciated 😊). Your support, as ever, really is so important to us.

Unfortunately, as many of you will be aware, we had some sad news this month regarding our Grove Hotel in Bournemouth. Like many businesses and organisations, the coronavirus pandemic has had a huge financial impact on our charity and if the drop in donations continue, concerns could develop for a funding risk for our hospice. We are incredibly proud of The Grove Hotel but there would be huge financial implications in order to reopen in the current climate and many of our potential guests would be unable to use the hotel due to their own health concerns and associated risks with Covid-19. The heart-breaking decision to put The Grove at risk of closure has been felt throughout our community but it is crucial for us to look at reducing our costs in order to continue providing the vital care delivered at our hospice and in our local area. You may have already seen the article about The Grove in the Bournemouth Echo (click here to read it) but the response to this news has been so touching. In particular, two neighbouring hotels in Bournemouth have decided to support our charity by making regular donations and asking their guests to donate to MCL too. They also hope to encourage other hotels in the area to follow their example. Thanks to everyone who has responded with such kindness and compassion regarding The Grove and its staff, it has meant so much to everyone involved at this difficult time.

On a happier note, we are pleased to be starting the process for some of our lovely volunteers to return to their roles. We are hoping that those who are able to, will be back in September and it will be wonderful to see them again. We are also very pleased to see our furloughed staff return to work – they have been greatly missed during these strange times and it is lovely to see our MCL family gradually being reunited.

Many of you superstars out there have signed up to our “Lace Up” challenge recently and we are very excited to see what other challenges you come up with for this virtual event. Have a look at our Facebook and Instagram pages for more details if you haven’t signed up yet – it’s a great way to join our community virtually and do something positive together. With September fast approaching, many of us are thinking about children returning to school and another bit of normality returning to our lives. If you’ve got some all-important shopping to do, please don’t forget to use Amazon Smile. Plus, Smile is now available on the Amazon app so it’s even easier to get Amazon to donate to your favourite charity (us, obvs!) while you shop!

Thank you all again for your fabulous and ongoing support. With so much in our lives feeling unsettled and unpredictable at the moment, we are extremely grateful that you are still finding time to do amazing things to support our hospice and it’s heroic team who continue to give the best care possible to our patients and their families. Enjoy this beautiful weather and time with your loved ones over the summer. Until next time…..
